For most taxpayers, the deadline to file federal tax returns, and pay any tax you owe, is April 15. The IRS offers a six-month extension to file and they may grant an extension for taxpayers in areas affected by natural disasters. Be sure to check the IRS website to keep track of tax relief for your state.

Please note that if you plan to file an extension, you need to do so by April 15. Keep in mind that even if you file an extension, the IRS still requires you to pay tax you owe by April 15. If you are unable to pay the tax you owe, work with a Tax Pro at Jackson Hewitt to start a payment plan with the IRS.

Quarterly estimated tax payments if you’re self-employed

If you are self-employed, a contractor, a freelancer, or have a side job, you may also be required to pay quarterly estimated tax payments throughout the year. These payments are due on April 15, June 16, Sept. 15, and Jan. 15 (of the following year).
