There is no tax deduction for adopting a child. However, there is a tax credit you may qualify for if you adopt a child. The Adoption Tax Credit (ATC) is worth up to $17,280 per eligible child for 2025, with up to $5,000 of that refundable. This means that you could get some money back as a refund after your tax has been paid. The ATC helps to cover things like adoption fees, attorney fees, travel expenses, court costs, and other expenses associated with adopting a child.

In addition to the ATC, new, adoptive parents may also be eligible for the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The CTC is worth up to $2,200 per child in 2025, with up to $1,700 refundable. To qualify, the child you have adopted must be younger than 17 at the end of the tax year, have lived with you for more than half the year, be your dependent, and have his or her own Social Security number.

Whether you’ve recently adopted a child or are in the process of doing so, it’s important to understand the tax benefits you may qualify for. Don’t miss a single one. Book your appointment to talk taxes with the pros today.
